Kena: Bridge of Spirits Has Already Recouped Its Development Costs

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was released in September to largely positive reviews (including a 9 out of 10 from us) and has performed well in sales. So much so that, according to developer Ember Labs, the game has already broken even on its development cost. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ember Lab heads Josh and Mike Grier discussed Kena's road from development to release. To their surprise, the game has apparently sold well, and while they don't divulge specific sale numbers, they say it's already recouped its initial development costs. It's unclear how much money Kena had behind it, but this is great news for the small studio.  "It's hard to tell what's a huge success," said Josh in the article. "Sony's happy." Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a third-person action-adventure title that stars Kena, a spirit guide, who guides small critters called the Rot to purify a land plagued by a supernatural blight. Along the way, you'll assist wayward souls to help ferry them to the afterlife, while action consists of melee and ranged combat. The game has an old-school linear design and scope, plus it's quite the looker in the art department (Ember Labs cut its teeth as an animation studio, after all). Kena is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via the Epic Games Store.  Be sure to read the full interview to learn more about the Kena: Bridge of Spirits' pre-release marketing, as well as our coverage hub for extensive background on the game itself. Cardi B's 'I Like It' Video With Bad Bunny & J Balvin Reminds Us of Another Song of the Summer

With Memorial Day unofficially kicking off summer, it’s inevitably time for us to start debating what will be this year’s Song of the Summer. And if the trend kicked off around this time last summer prove true, Cardi B may have just solidified herself a seasonal anthem with her new single.

Cardi unveiled her new video for new song “I Like It” featuring reggaeton superstars J Balvin and Bad Bunny. While the song was an immediate standout when the rapper dropped her Invasion of Privacy album on April 5—hitting the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts from interest alone—the track looks poised for larger domination with a radio push and official music video unveiling at the end of this month.

The song’s blend of hip-hop, Latin-pop and reggaeton was paired with a simple, tropical, party-ready video that sees Cardi, Bunny and Balvin flouncing around Miami and eventually hitting a neon-tinged party together. The visual isn’t groundbreaking—but Cardi does serve some looks here—but it doesn’t need to be when you’re serving a feel-good summer smash like “I Like It” is seemingly being prepped to be. The fact that “Despacito” is the most-viewed music video ever on YouTube, yet it’s mostly just fun party scenes of Fonsi and friends partying in San Juan is all the more reason why a simple-yet-tropical video works perfectly for “I Like It.”

The industry seems to agree too. Last week, Spotify revealed that “I Like It” was their No. 1 choice to be song of the summer based on key indicators like the song having an upward trajectory on the service, strong engagement in key playlists, momentum, buzz and vibe. Meanwhile, Apple Music’s Songs of the Summer playlist was recently revealed and also features “I Like It,” though a few slots further down the curated list that included tracks by Ariana Grande, Calvin Harris and Childish Gambino.

Further pushing “I Like It” is the fact that featured rappers J Balvin and Bad Bunny are only growing more popular as the former has flexed his pop muscles with Beyoncé and Liam Payne tracks while the latter has become one of Latin music’s go-to collaborators with the likes of Becky G, Enrique Iglesias, Ozuna and Farruko all nabbing U.S. hits with him.

So, fair warning: Don’t hit the repeat button too many times. The “I Like It” takeover has only just started…and summer doesn’t officially start for another 23 days. Next, watch a special episode of Weekly News Rap dedicated to all things Cardi below:
