NVIDIA did an excellent job getting gamers hyped up for the launch of its RTX 3080, which possesses an enormous leap in performance during the last generation. Yesterday morning when it came time and energy to sell it, however, the train went a little off the rails. NVIDIA didn’t take into account the excitement it created apparently, because the $699 RTX 3080 Founder’s Edition sold-out nearly instantly. In addition, the website went almost soon after sales opened down, shutting out most buyers.
In a post on its forums (via Gamerant), NVIDIA said “we apologize to your customers because of this morning’s experience,” explaining that “the NVIDIA store was inundated with traffic and encountered errors.” It said that were able to resolve the presssing issue and resumed sales, adding that it had been taking actions, including manually reviewing orders, to avoid scalpers and bots.
However, frustrated buyers figure that the stock was purchased by bots, with one user tweeting he “stayed up forever merely to get crashed servers and everything sold-out within two minutes without me even seeing that as available.” As Gizmodo noted, a lot of cards have popped through to eBay at double or even more the retail price and something Founder’s Edition card apparently sold for $70,000 (there’s one on the website at this time that’s been bid around $43,900 by 4AM ET today).
As for having less stock, NVIDIA said that it’s “shipping more RTX 3080 cards each day to retailers.” Newegg tweeted that it “experienced increased traffic compared to the morning of Black Friday” and sold-out of RTX 3080 cards in 5 minutes, saying “bot protection was set up, orders were human.” The ongoing company promised release a more of the cards “once we get more.”
