The Tesla “battery day” presentation is nearly here, tomorrow after being rescheduled from April because of the coronavirus pandemic set to occur. But with just hours to go before company reveals something – the expectation is that it is rolling out a minumum of one new kind of battery cell which could make it stay before growing EV competition – Elon Musk has some news.
We intend to increase, not reduce battery cell purchases from Panasonic, LG & CATL (possibly other partners too). However, even with our cell suppliers going at maximum speed, we still foresee significant shortages in 2022 & beyond unless we also take action ourselves.

According to Musk, “what we announce won’t reach serious high-volume production until 2022,” which could have implications because of its Semi, Roadster and cybertruck. He also continued to state that the business plans to improve battery cell purchases from partners like Panasonic and LG, but indicating the ongoing company will need action in order to avoid shortages later on, a possible hint toward engaging in cell manufacturing itself. Tomorrow we’ll learn exactly what which means once the presentation occurs, day event scheduled to start out at 4:30PM ET / 1:30PM PT with the Annual Meeting of Stockholders and Battery.
