Jordan Vogt-Roberts to Helm Netflix’s Live-Action Gundam Movie

Vogt-Roberts has officially signed on to direct the studio’s first-ever live-action feature film version of Gundam for Netflix, which will be based on the universe of Sunrise’s iconic Japanese robot franchise.This marks Legendary and Netflix’s latest collaboration together, the two companies previously worked on films such as 2016’s Spectral and last year’s Enola Holmes as well as shows like Lost in Space and Pacific Rim: The Black. They are also currently working on the anime series adaptation of Skull Island and Tom Raider.RELATED: Netflix’s Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Series Wraps Production!Plot details for the Netflix film are being kept under wraps but the original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular. The Gundam universe is replete with numerous storylines of love and conflict along with the popular Gundam battles, in which the characters operate robot suits called Mobile Suits.The live-action Gundam film will be penned by Brian K Vaughan. It will be produced by Vogt-Roberts with Vaughan set as executive producer. The massively popular Mecha anime and science fiction media franchise is Sunrise’s multi-billion-dollar property that has spawned a multi-platform universe encompassing televised anime, manga, animated films, video games, plastic models, toys, and novels among other media. Gundam continues to dominate Bandai Namco’s earnings almost forty years after its inception.

    Weeks after casting its titular leading actress, Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay took to Twitter to talk about the initial set photo of her upcoming series adaptation of DC Comics’ Naomi , confirming that production has begun on the The CW pilot officially. If the pilot secure a string order, this marks DuVernay’s second DC series with Warner Bros. Television, after HBO Max greenlit the Rosario Dawson-led DMZ miniseries this past year.     Based on Brian Michael David and Bendis F. Walker’s DC comic series, the  Naomi pilot centers around the titular character in her teenage years as she journeys from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse, however when a supernatural event rattles her hometown, she must attempt to uncover its origins, discovering a thing that will challenge everything people believe about superheroes.

    The pilot will be led by Kaci Walfall ( Army Wives , Power ), who has been tapped to portray the superhero role of Naomi.  Joining her are Alexander Wraith ( Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ), Cranston Johnson ( Filthy Rich , P-Valley ), and newcomer Camila Moreno have already been cast as series regulars also.

    Their official character descriptions are the following:

    Walfall’s Naomi – “An effortlessly cool and confident senior high school student who’s the adopted daughter of doting parents. Favored by all the small children in her military town, Naomi is unafraid to embrace her AP-student, comic book-loving nerdiness. Following a supernatural event results in the discovery of her powers within, Naomi pursues her hidden destiny.”

    Wraith shall play Dee –   Who owns an area tattoo parlor. Whenever a strange event leaves the city in chaos, Dee hints he knows a lot more than he is ready to tell.”

    Johnson portrays Zumbado – “The mysterious owner of an area car or truck lot. Having heard troubling rumors about his past, Naomi tries in order to avoid him actively, but a tense encounter leaves her both curious and shaken.”

    Moreno is Lourdes – “A woman with a sarcastic love of life who works in an antique collectibles shop. She’s an unrequited crush on Naomi, and she actually is shared by her obsession with classic comics. She is pleased to interact on Naomi’s schemes also.”

    The potential series is written and executive produced by the  Selma  director Ava DuVernay and  Arrow  alum Blankenship Jill. It will be co-produced by Warner Bros. DuVernay’s and television Array Filmworks, that includes a rich overall deal currently.
