Kristen Stewart Responds to Fans Wanting Her to Play the Joker

Throughout the past couple of weeks, a large contingent of people on the internet has been clamoring for actress Kristen Stewart to one day star as the Joker in a Batman project. Recently, she responded to the thought and cast some doubt on that ever happening.

In a recent interview with Variety, Stewart was asked about the social media campaign, which likely sprung up due to her former Twilight co-star and ex-boyfriend Robert Pattinson taking on the mantle of Batman in the upcoming The Batman film. While Stewart loved the “energy” behind the idea, she would rather figure out another role for herself.

“I love the energy behind that,” Stewart said. “It’s really been done so well. I feel like, maybe, we don’t traipse over, but I love that gusto. Let’s figure something else out. I’m totally down to play a freaky, scary person.”

When pressed to see if she giving a definitive “no” to the role, Stewart didn’t say that, but did say that she’d rather do something “new” if given the chance. “Not ‘no,’ but not the most stoked I’ve ever been. Let’s do something new.”

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. It will be led by Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as GCPD’s James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Ferrell as Oswald Cobblepot/ Penguin. It will also feature Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, Alex Ferns, and twins Max and Charlie Carver.

During last year’s DC FanDome, Reeves confirmed that the movie will focus on Bruce Wayne’s second year as Batman, and, per Walter Hamada, that the film is set in a different universe separate from the Justice League DCEU characters. Reeves also previously teased that they will be telling a detective story that follows a series of murders that open up the history of corruption in Gotham and how Bruce’s family is linked.

Reeves and Dylan Clark (the Planet of the Apes films) are producing the film, with Simon Emanuel, Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, and Chantal Nong Vo serving as executive producers.

The Batman opens in theaters on March 4, 2022.
