Christian Bale Was Terrified of Gorr the God Butcher’s G-String Before Thor: Love and Thunder

Christian Bale is set to terrify a pair of thunder gods in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder, but he was frightened when he learned about his character’s early appearances in Marvel comics. The villain he portrays, known as Gorr the God Butcher, is known to attack the heavens wearing little more than a G-string, a costume that didn’t suit the former Batman.

In a recent interview from Total Film, he said, “I thought, ‘They don’t have the right man for that!’ And then Taika [Waititi] quickly dispelled any notions of running around in that. But I always did think what he could do with this in front of a bluescreen – he could chuck on whatever he wants later on.”

From the few glimpses we’ve seen of Gorr in the film, it does seem that Taika went with a more tasteful look for the vengeful supervillain. Still, as Bale continued, that doesn’t mean that the director didn’t have some fun with the role. “Taika and I wanted to do a whole dance, which we didn’t get to do, but we had all this sort of Kate Bush stuff that we worked at. But I think he just realized he was never going to be allowed to put that in the final film.”

Another question posed to the actor was how he felt about appearing in another superhero movie after he defined his version of the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Bale did not seem flustered as all to be crossing over to Marvel from the distinguished competition. “I’d read that, and people would go, ‘Oh, look at this! He’s entered the MCU!’ And I’d go, ‘I’ve done what? I haven’t entered shit, thank you very much.’ I’m like, ‘The MCU?’ I had to ask what that was.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will see Thor and The Mighty Thor team up against Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher when it hits theaters on July 8.
