The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann and series co-creator Craig Mazin have spoken about how early the season finale’s opening scene with Ellie’s mother has been in the works.
Speaking with Empire, Druckmann revealed that the scene starring Ellie’s mother, Anna &# 8212, played by Ashley Johnson, who portrayed her in the game, and which demonstrates how she acquired her immunity, had been planned since soon after the first game was finished. Initially, the concept was going to be turned into an animated simple, but it never materialized.

Mazin continued by saying that the scene serves as a double metaphor for how Ellie &# 8217’s life has always included violence, tragedy, and loss because she was born into it.
There’s just something so beautiful about Ellie being born from tragedy as well as violence, &# 8220, Mazin said. &# 8220 She starts losing people as soon as she takes her first breath. That is the life scenario of Ellie. &# 8221,
