How old is the Barbie doll supposed to be?
The original Barbie doll was supposed to be 19 years old. But in the film, she is much older and probably ageless.
Making her debut on March 9, 1959, at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, Barbie was inspired by its creator Ruth Handler’s 18-year-old daughter named Barbara. (via New York Times) However, the doll was supposed to be 19 years old upon her launch. 64 years have passed since then in 2023. But if she aged, then she would have been 83 years old in 2023.
It appears that Barbie is frozen in time and will always stay a 19-year-old. However, in the movie, all the Barbies appeared older. Their ages weren’t mentioned and one could presume that every Barbie might be of similar ages as the actresses playing them. For example, Margot Robbie’s Barbie would be 33.
However, since all Barbies remain the same and don’t really age, we could deduce that the Barbie dolls in the movie are ageless.
How old is the Ken doll supposed to be?
Ken has no official age and is supposed to be ageless in the Barbie movie, similar to Barbie herself.
The Ken doll was launched just two years after Barbie on March 11, 1961. It has been around for 62 years compared to Barbie’s 64. However, it never got an official age statement from Mattel or its creator.
In the Barbie movie, Ken dolls were played by actors of different ages. Ryan Gosling, the main Ken that the movie focuses in, was 43 years old during the shooting of the film.
