Canada shall invest billions to electrify mass transit

Mass transit isn't getting much use during the pandemic, but Canada wants to be sure it's eco-friendly when the crisis is over. The Canadian government plans to invest $2.75 billion CAD (about $2.17 billion US) into electrifying mass transit across the country over five years. This will include buying more zero-emissions buses in addition to other initiatives, officials said. The effort is part of a larger $14.9 billion CAD ($11.77 billion US) public transportation upgrade package. Existing programs have already supported buying 300 eco-friendly buses, but this will help the government reach its goal of a much larger rollout of 5,000 buses over that five-year period. Not surprisingly, the government hopes this environmental move will also create jobs for Canadian bus makers like Nova Bus, GreenPower and New Flyer. The challenge, of course, is delivering a meaningful impact. While Canada's relatively small population and concentration in a handful of large cities could help the money go far, there's no guarantee this will let transportation outfits switch completely to EVs or hydrogen. It could give them the push they need, though, and success in Canada could give the US and other countries an example of how to electrify their own transit fleets.

Till February 2022 canada extends cruise liner ban

Due to the worsening situation of Coronavirus in India, Canada extended its cruise ship ban till February 2022. And as per the latest reports, this ban will affect popular voyage destinations in Canada such as Maritime Provinces and St. Lawrence River on the Atlantic side to British Columbia along the Pacific Coast. The cruise ban has been extended till 28 February 2022, and the rule is applicable for all cruise vessels that are capable of carrying more than 100 people. Initially, the country had banned cruise ships till March 2021, however, due to the rise of cases the officials decided to ban them until next year February. Referring to this, Omar Alghabra, Canada’s Minister of Transport issued a statement saying that the Canadians continue to do their hard work to ensure to check the spread of coronavirus and the government officials are working hard to ensure that Canada’s transportation systems remain safe. Omar Alghabra also said the temporary prohibitions to cruise vessels are a need of the hour to protect people against the virus. This also saves the healthcare works from working overtime which they have contributed for a whole of the year 2020. Canada has also extended a ban on all adventure-seeking pleasure craft from entering Arctic waters. Those found violating this ban will face a fine of up to $5000 per day for individuals, or a $25000 fine per day for corporations or groups, this is a new rule in addition to banning cruise ships. The government also issued warnings for Canadians boarding cruise ships abroad outside Canada as it has been reported that many Canadians are flying outside the country to escape harsh winters. Quebec calls for airport testing to check the spread of the new coronavirus during the holiday season

On Tuesday, the Canadian province of Quebec urged the federal government to require Covid-19 testing for residents returning to the country for a year-end vacation. This comes after the fact that the images of maskless tourists frolicking the beaches have made the cases sore high and it spread virally in social media. Canada’s travel restrictions are among the world’s toughest, with non-essential travelers generally denied entry, and citizens returning from abroad are mandated to quarantine. But the second wave of coronavirus has led to calls for increased airport testing as hospitals have filled to near capacity in the country’s populous states. Christian Dubé, Health minister of Quebec is asking vacationers returning to the province to be tested before departure and a strict 14-day quarantine after they return home. Both Quebec and Ontario government has asked the government for airport testing for international travelers. “The federal government tells us about the implementation of these measures in early January,” said the health minister and he continued. “To us, this is not fast enough.” This was told to the reporters after Christian Dubé spoke with Canadian Minister of Health Patty Hajdu. Quebec has shuttered all non-essential businesses and limited restaurant services to take out only. The public health agency in Canada said in a statement that the travel to the country is down to 90% at airports as compared to previous years and 2% of all known covid-19 cases in the country is said to have been from people who returned from other countries. Canada has advised against any non-essential travel and will continue to see ‘science & evidence’ to check border control, the province of Alberta has been running a pilot program since November where they tested travelers returning to Calgary International Airport for Coronavirus.
