Yakuza Combat Will Forward Be Turn-Based Going

Following the reveal of Lost Judgment, an interview with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio director Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Kazuki Hosokawa has surfaced on IGN. Lost Judgment brings Ryu Ga Gotoku back to its action-combat roots, leaving many fans to wonder if that meant the Yakuza series would also return to that style following last year's Yakuza: Like a Dragon.Speaking to IGN, Nagoshi and Hosokawa confirmed that the Judgment series will carry on the studio's action style of gameplay, while Yakuza will continue to evolve as a turn-based RPG. "The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG," they told IGN. "On the other hand, over the years, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgment." Yakuza: Like a Dragon's turn-based combat Romain Mahut of GameBlog was in attendance at a virtual "Judgment Day" event that followed the Lost Judgment reveal and asked if the studio considered using turn-based combat similar to that of Yakuza: Like a Dragon for Lost Judgment. "For Yakuza: Like a Dragon, we changed the game's battle system from action into a turn-based RPG," Nagoshi said in response. "This was a huge challenge for us, but it was well-received, which we were thrilled to hear. We did discuss the possibility of developing that battle system further for our next title, and while we may pursue the turn-based system even outside the Yakuza series, the conclusion we ended up at was that because this is a different series, the best approach would be to keep them separate and refine what makes each series great. It's my hope that our customers feel the same way we do. That's why we chose 'action' as an important keyword for the Judgment series.  Nagoshi also said on the Judgment Day video he believes that, when possible, a simultaneous global launch is "the right way to go" and that the team has "determined to make every effort to support this for all [its] games moving forward." This is significant as the Yakuza series has a long tradition of Western versions releasing years after the Japanese version. Following the success of Yakuza 0 in the West, the release windows have narrowed, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which debuted last year, still had a 10-month gap between the Japanese and worldwide releases. Lost Judgment's action-oriented combat Yakuza: Like a Dragon is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, while Lost Judgment comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 24. For more on what we thought about Yakuza: Like a Dragon, check out our review here.     Spotify's shared playlist queue feature expands to Polestar 2 vehicles

    Last year, Spotify started beta testing Group Sessions. It's a feature that allows up to six people to share control over the music playing in the background of a physical or virtual get-together. Those involved can queue up songs, podcasts and playlists, as well as skip tracks they don't like. In an expansion spotted by The Verge, you can now take advantage of Group Sessions in the first (and currently only) Android Automotive car, the Polestar 2. Once a driver starts a session, everyone else in the car can join by scanning the Spotify code that appears on the Polestar 2's front display. One important limitation is that only those with Spotify Premium accounts can join, so not just anyone can hijack your playlist and turn a fun road trip into an exercise in patience. The driver can also revoke access at any time because, as Polestar correctly points out, "passengers aren't always right."

    HBO Max shall showcase its streaming library having an interactive SXSW experience

    South by Southwest is taking place online this year, and one of the things attendees can check out is an interactive HBO Max experience. HBO Max Orbit aims to show off the depth of the streaming service's catalog in a novel way. Through facial movement recognition and voice commands, HBO Max Orbit will allow you to interact with moments, stories and characters from the library, according to WarnerMedia. HBO Max has packed more than 150,000 clips into Orbit, including ones from Game of Thrones, Lovecraft Country, The Big Bang Theory, Tom and Jerry and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The scenes are drawn from titles from HBO, Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network and other WarnerMedia brands. The experience will dig up clips of characters that match your movements in real time. Certain clips will activate a challenge, through which you'll need to move your face to look for clips that match a title. You might also be asked to say a phrase from a specific show within a time limit. Completing a challenge will unlock parts of an exclusive clip from Godzilla vs. Kong, which arrives on HBO Max and in theaters at the end of the month. You'll be able to check out HBO Max Orbit starting on March 19th. Starting in April, an in-person version will be available at some flagship AT&T stores. WarnerMedia says that will take place in an immersive 360-degree chamber designed to "optimize the feeling of a vast audio-visual space." It will match clips to your body movements and voice.

    Vudu is here on Amazon's Fire TV platform

    Last year Walmart sold its mostly-video on-demand video service Vudu to Fandango, and now, after many years of not working on Amazon's Fire TV platform the app has finally reached one of the few devices it wasn't already on. Vudu has always specialized in delivering high-quality movies and TV shows, even dating back to when you needed a $400 box just to access it. While Fire TV of course includes Amazon's own video on-demand store, having Vudu available means people can stream 4K and HDR content from another source, as well as enjoy the various sales and even free ad-supported streaming it has. In a statement, Fandango exec Kevin Shepela said "With Vudu’s vast library of premium content from new release event movies to favorite films and TV shows, we are excited to deliver to Fire TV users so many new viewing options to watch in their living rooms, many in breathtaking 4K." The announcement also noted "double-digit" growth in new accounts during 2020 — you'd hope so, with so many people watching movies at home — compared to the previous year. Along with this launch, and Vudu recently becoming available on Comcast's set-top boxes, that hopefully means good things about its future under new ownership. The pace of developing new features for Vudu has always been relatively slow, and while its UI is consistent, it hasn't changed significantly in many years, so anyone with a library of content stored on the service benefits from it continuing to grow.

    All of the real methods to watch the Super Bowl

NFL's biggest event of the year is a television phenomenon that goes beyond just sports, be it million-dollar-commercials, the half-time concert or just an excuse to chow down on chicken wings. It used to be that the only way to watch was to either have a cable or satellite subscription, or venture out to your local sports bar (Remember bars?). Fortunately, you now have a plethora of viewing options, including ways to stream. Where and when? Super Bowl 2021 will take place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida on February 7th. The kick-off time is set for 6:30pm ET / 3:30pm PT. It'll be televised on CBS as well as ESPN Deportes in Spanish.  How to watch with cable or satellite TV Obviously, if you subscribe to either cable or satellite, you'll have no problem watching the Super Bowl this Sunday on your TV. This is good news if you'd rather not bother with signing up for a service online, or if you have a spotty internet connection. How to stream the Super Bowl Cord-cutters have plenty of ways to watch the big game this Sunday. One of them is through a live TV streaming service, as long as it carries CBS. Thankfully, a lot of them do. YouTube TV ($65 a month), AT&T TV ($70-plus a month) and Fubo TV ($65-plus a month) all include CBS. Alternately, you can also watch the game through CBS All Access (starting at $6 a month), whose name is changing next month to Paramount Plus.  If you don't currently subscribe to any of these services and want to watch the game for free, you can sign up to one for a seven-day free trial period just to watch the game, and then cancel afterward. The one exception here is AT&T TV, which currently doesn’t offer free trials.  We should note, however, that those with Hulu with Live TV ($65 a month) might be out of luck, as Hulu has lost the distribution rights to a number of CBS affiliates late last year. You're in luck: You can watch the Super Bowl this Sunday too, thanks to a few different livestreams. You can watch the game for free on CBSSports.com as well as through the CBS Sports app, which is accessible via your phone or through a streaming device such as Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV or Google TV.  You can also watch the game through the NFL app or the Yahoo Sports app. (Yahoo is owned by Engadget's parent company, Verizon.) Of course, you could also use an indoor antenna with your TV to simply watch the free over-the-air broadcast.  International viewers can use NFL's international game pass streaming service, which has a seven-day free trial. If you’d rather not go through that, however, check out this guide to see if your country has a local Super Bowl broadcast partner.  What about 4K? Last year, Fox made history by broadcasting the Super Bowl in 4K and HDR for the first time (it was still shot in 1080p and HDR, but was upscaled to 4K in the broadcast). However, that is not an option this year because CBS Sports is at the helm and has less experience with 4K broadcasts. CBS Sports also cited “production limitations” caused by COVID-19 as a reason why it couldn’t broadcast the game in 4K. 

    Warner Bros. will release its 2023 movies in theaters first

    Furiosa in 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Warner Bros. Warner Bros.’ plans to release all 2021 movies simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters is only temporary, it seems. Variety reports the studio has confirmed that its Mad Max prequel Furiosa, the animated/live action hybrid Coyote vs. Acme and a musical take on The Color Purple will all release in theaters in 2023 — with no mention of an HBO Max debut. That doesn’t rule out any streaming plans, but we wouldn’t count on watching these titles from home on day one. The media giant clearly plans to settle back into the familiar pre-pandemic cycle of blockbusters and holiday premieres. Furiosa arrives first, on June 23rd, 2023, while Coyote vs. Acme is due slightly later on July 21st. The Color Purple is slated to premiere on December 20th of that year. Warner’s messaging isn’t subtle — it’s signalling to creators and the public that its 2021 strategy is a response to the COVID-19 pandemic rather than a sign of a long-term shift. The company has faced stiff opposition to its plan from Dune director Denis Villeneuve and Tenet’s Christopher Nolan, with Villeneuve claiming that Warner was trashing cinema in the name of propping up HBO Max. A 2023 movie slate won’t satisfy those creators in the short term, but it might keep them from dropping the studio. This won’t be thrilling if you view same-day streaming as a chance for the movie industry to break away from an old formula and the grip of theater chains. With that said, Warner is also being somewhat optimistic about the state of theaters. Many theaters have been in danger or even closed as a result of the pandemic, and even AMC has warned it might run out of cash. Although it won’t be surprising if the theater business rebuilds by 2023, big-screen debuts might not be as important as they were before 2020.     Bad Bunny is Spotify's most-streamed artist of 2020

    Spotify ‘Tis the season for top 10 lists, so nearly every streaming service or content-hosting website will release its “best of” roundups between now and the end of the month. Spotify is one of the regulars, and as part of its annual Wrapped festivities, the company has revealed its top charts for the year. For 2020, Bad Bunny is the most-streamed artist on the platform globally with over 8.3 billion streams, followed by Drake, J Balvin, Juice WRLD and The Weeknd — in that order. Billie Eilish is the most popular female artist for a second straight year with Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Halsey rounding out the top 5. The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is the most-streamed song globally with almost 1.6 billion streams this year, while Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG is the top album — amassing over 3.3 billion streams. Other popular albums, in order of global rank, include The Weeknd’s After Hours, Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding, Harry Styles’ Fine Line and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. When it comes to the rest of the top-five singles, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I, “The Box” by Roddy Ricch, “Roses - Imanbek Remix” by Imanbek and SAINt JHN and “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa finish up that list. In 2019, Spotify bet big on podcasts and it continued to do so in 2020. This year, future Spotify exclusive show The Joe Rogan Experience is the most popular podcast globally. That’s a pretty impressive feat considering it just debuted on Spotify in September. And of course, that’s a great sign considering the podcast will become exclusive to the service at the end of the year and reports indicate the agreement is worth over $100 million. Interestingly, Rogan’s show falls to number two on the US chart, with NPR News Now eclipsing it for the top spot in the States. TED Talks Daily, The New York Times’ The Daily, The Michelle Obama Podcast and Barstool Sports’ Call Her Daddy also make up Spotify’s year-end top five. As far as podcast genres are concerned, Society & Culture is number one, followed by Comedy, Lifestyle & Health, Arts & Entertainment and Education. In typical Spotify fashion, the company also noted some trends for 2020. Unsurprisingly, the service saw 1,400+ percent increase in work-from-home-themed (WFH) playlists between April and May. What’s more, the company says about 65,000 playlists were created by users with the title “Black Lives Matter” or “BLM.” Perhaps as a coping mechanism, Spotify users contributed to a 180 percent increase in health and wellness podcast listening in 2020. And overall, the most popular time to listen to a podcast this year on the platform was between 6AM-9AM. While the US top charts stack up similarly to the global lists, there are some interesting changes.
